Bios: 

1. Dominik Ruffeis is a full-time trainer and coach in higher education at the Teaching Academy of Graz University of Technology. With a PhD in environmental engineering and extensive international experience, he focuses on higher education pedagogy, driving capacity building and the scholarship of teaching and learning through evidence-informed training and coaching.
2. Lisa Mittischek is a sociologist and educator at TU Graz, where she contributes to Unite! WP2.3 on Innovative Learning Designs and Challenge-Based Learning, works at the Gender, Diversity & Equity unit and teaches university courses. Holding a PhD in Adult Education and Didactics, her work spans research, higher education and science communication, with a particular focus on sociology, gender, diversity and inclusive learning environments. She also provides professional development for university educators on gender- and diversity-sensitive teaching and unconscious bias, bridging academic expertise, innovative pedagogy and societal challenges.

No prior experience with Challenge-Based Learning is required. The event welcomes both participants who are new to the topic and those who are already developing or delivering CBL activities. Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) offers an opportunity to rethink higher education: rather than starting with disciplines or predefined curricula, students, educators and external partners work together on real-world challenges that matter to society. 

In a European University Alliance, this approach gains an additional dimension. Challenges can be addressed across institutional, national and disciplinary boundaries, bringing together diverse perspectives, local contexts and European networks. But how can challenge-based learning be designed and implemented collaboratively across different universities? What formats, competences and support structures are needed to make it sustainable? 

Join this interactive online event to explore the potential of Challenge-Based Learning in a European University Alliance. Together with educators, researchers, students and professional staff, we will discuss experiences, identify opportunities for collaboration and reflect on how CBL can contribute to more inclusive, interdisciplinary and future-oriented education.

What to expect?

During the event, participants will:

• learn about the key principles and formats of Challenge-Based Learning;
• explore how CBL can be implemented across universities in a European alliance like  Unite! ;
• discuss examples of challenge-based and interdisciplinary learning initiatives;
• reflect on the roles of students, teachers, external stakeholders and support staff;
• identify opportunities and practical next steps for joint CBL activities within the alliance.

The session will combine short input presentations with interactive discussion and peer exchange. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences, questions and ideas for possible challenges that could be addressed in a European and cross-disciplinary setting.
